Saigon Central Post Office: Hours, History & What to See (2026) | Guide for Muslim Travellers
The Saigon Central Post Office (Bưu điện Trung tâm Sài Gòn) at 2 Cong Xa Paris, opposite the Notre-Dame Cathedral, is a working post office inside one of the finest French colonial buildings in Vietnam. Completed in 1891, its yellow façade, vaulted iron-framed hall and hand-painted maps make it a 20–40 minute stop on almost every city tour. Entry is free and it is open every day, roughly 7:00–8:00 until 17:00–18:00 depending on the day. For Muslim travellers it is one of the easiest visits in the city: no religious rules, and Saigon Central Mosque and certified-halal Halal@Saigon are a 10-minute walk away on Dong Du Street.

Status (checked October 2026): open daily and free to enter; recent local sources give slightly different hours, so plan your visit between 8:00 and 17:00 to be safe. The Notre-Dame Cathedral across the square is still under long-term restoration: you can see the exterior, but the interior is closed to visitors.

Is the Saigon Central Post Office Muslim-Friendly?
Completely. It is a secular public building where locals still post parcels and pay bills, so there is no dress code beyond normal modest clothing and no ritual of any kind. The high-ceilinged hall has benches to rest on, and counters sell postcards, stamps and souvenirs. Families, honeymoon couples and older Muslim visitors from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Gulf often find it the most relaxing stop of a Ho Chi Minh City day, especially combined with a halal lunch on Dong Du Street.
The Post Office in 60 Seconds
- 1863: the French open Saigon’s first telegraph office on this site.
- 1886–1891: the present building is constructed to the design of architect Alfred Foulhoux; it is often – wrongly – credited to Gustave Eiffel, whose era of iron architecture it reflects.
- The maps: two large painted maps inside show Saigon et ses environs (1892) and the telegraph lines of southern Vietnam and Cambodia (1936).
- Today: it remains the city’s central post office, with a large portrait of Ho Chi Minh at the end of the main hall.
What You Will See
The French Colonial Façade
Arched windows, green shutters and a large clock crown the yellow façade on Paris Square. Look for the names of French and European scientists and inventors carved along the front.

The Vaulted Main Hall
Inside, a barrel-vaulted roof on slender iron columns gives the hall the feel of a 19th-century railway station. The tiled floor, wooden counters and old telephone booths along the walls are original features of the building.

The Historic Maps
Above the counters on either side of the entrance hang the 1892 map of Saigon and its surroundings and the 1936 map of the telegraph network. They are worth a few minutes and a photo.
Postcards and Souvenirs
Buy a postcard and stamps at the counter and post it home from here – a classic Saigon souvenir. Small shops inside sell books, lacquerware and silk items.
