Cat Cat Village Sapa: Tickets, Walking Route & Tips (2026) | Guide for Muslim Visitors

Cat Cat Village (Bản Cát Cát) is a Black Hmong village tucked into the valley about 2–3 km below Sapa town, reached by a paved lane and a loop of stone steps past wooden houses, water wheels, craft workshops and the Cat Cat waterfall. It is the easiest village walk in Sapa: about 2–3 hours on foot, open every day, with an entrance ticket of 150,000 VND per adult (about 80,000 VND for children). For Muslim travellers it is a pleasant, family-friendly half day – the only things to plan are the steep climb back and lunch, since the village food stalls are not halal; Sapa’s Muslim-run halal kitchens are a 10-minute ride away in town.

Is Cat Cat Village Muslim-Friendly?

Yes, with two practical notes. First, food: the stalls along the path sell grilled pork skewers, sausages and corn wine, so Muslim visitors should eat in Sapa town before or after the walk. Second, like most rural Hmong villages, chickens, dogs and the occasional pig roam freely around the houses; it is easy to keep your distance on the main path. Everything else suits Muslim families, couples and women in hijab: the village is used to visitors, nobody expects you to join any ritual, and long, loose clothing is ideal for the cool mountain air and the steps.

Cat Cat Village in 60 Seconds

  • Who lives here: Black Hmong families, known for indigo-dyed hemp clothing and silver jewellery.
  • The name: often said to come from the French word cascade, after the waterfall at the bottom of the valley.
  • French era: a small hydro-electric station built in the colonial period still stands by the stream.
  • Today: a community tourism village inside Sa Pa ward, Lao Cai province, with workshops, viewpoints and photo spots along a signposted loop.

What You Will See

Wooden Houses and Water Wheels

The path winds past Hmong homes built of pomu wood with low eaves, rice and corn drying on terraces, and wooden water wheels turning in the stream – the classic Cat Cat photo.

Indigo Dyeing and Weaving

Hmong women demonstrate how hemp is spun, woven and dyed with indigo, and how beeswax batik patterns are drawn. Scarves, bags and jackets are sold along the way; bargaining politely is normal.

Cat Cat Waterfall and the Footbridges

At the bottom of the loop the stream drops over a rocky waterfall, crossed by wooden and suspension footbridges. It is the coolest spot of the walk and a good place to rest.
