Ta Phin Village Sapa: Red Dao Herbal Bath, Cave & Tips (2026) | Guide for Muslim Families

Ta Phin Village (Bản Tả Phìn) is a quiet farming valley about 12 km north-east of Sapa town, home mainly to Red Dao and Black Hmong families. It is the place to see Red Dao embroidery being made, explore a small limestone cave and try the famous Red Dao herbal bath (about 150,000–200,000 VND per person). The drive takes 30–40 minutes; a community entrance fee of about 40,000 VND per adult (20,000 VND for children) is usually collected at the village gate. For Muslim travellers it is a calmer, less commercial alternative to Cat Cat – with private herbal-bath rooms that suit families and women who value modesty – but there is no halal food in the village, so lunch is best in Sapa town.

Is Ta Phin Village Muslim-Friendly?

Yes. Ta Phin is a farming community, not a religious site, and visitors of every faith are welcome to walk the lanes, watch embroidery and visit homes. Two practical points: there is no halal food in the village, and, as in most mountain villages, chickens, dogs and pigs roam near the houses. The herbal bath is taken in private wooden tubs in small rooms, so couples, families and women in hijab can bathe in privacy; ask for a room with a lock and bring your own bathing clothes.

Ta Phin in 60 Seconds

  • Who lives here: mostly Red Dao people – recognisable by the women’s red headscarves – and Black Hmong families.
  • Known for: intricate Red Dao embroidery and the herbal bath made from dozens of mountain plants.
  • History: the stone ruins of a French-built monastery from the 1940s stand on the hillside near the village.
  • Landscape: rice terraces, corn fields and limestone hills, with a cave in the hillside above the valley.

What You Will See

Red Dao Embroidery

Red Dao women sit outside their homes stitching geometric patterns onto indigo cloth. Bags, scarves and cushion covers make good souvenirs; some women will follow you hoping to sell, so a kind “no, thank you” is fine if you do not want to buy.

The Red Dao Herbal Bath

Families boil leaves, roots and bark gathered in the forest and serve the bath in large wooden tubs. It is relaxing after a trek, especially on cold days. Avoid it if you are pregnant, have heart or blood-pressure problems, or have just eaten a large meal.

Ta Phin Cave

A short climb above the village leads to a limestone cave about 300 m long with several chambers. Paths are rough and mostly unlit; bring a torch and shoes with grip; your guide will walk in with you.

Rice Terraces and the Old Monastery

Walk the lanes between terraced fields to the roofless stone walls of the old monastery – a peaceful spot for photos, especially from September to October when the rice turns gold.

Halal Meals and the Nearest Mosque

There is no halal food in Ta Phin. Sapa town, 30–40 minutes away, has several Muslim-run halal restaurants – on Thac Bac Street (Hajah Hawa at 016, Pak Tam at 025, Sapa Halal Restaurant at 10B) and Sapa Halal Kitchen Faizal by Sapa Market – none certified by a named halal body, so we explain what each offers. On our tours we pre-book halal meals in Sapa and, for village days, agree alternatives with you in advance, such as vegetarian food, seafood without meat or halal-friendly dishes, or a packed lunch from town. There is no mosque in Lao Cai province; the nearest is Al-Noor Mosque in Hanoi. More in our guide to halal food in Sapa.

Tips for Muslim Families, Women and Older Travellers

  • Combine with a short trek: an easy walk through the terraces takes 1–2 hours; your guide can shorten it for older travellers.
  • Herbal bath timing: have it at the end of the visit, then drive back to Sapa to rest.
  • Clothing: long, loose layers and a rain jacket; the valley is cool and damp much of the year.
  • Toilets: facilities are basic; use the hotel or a restaurant in Sapa before leaving.
