Designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu and completed in 1966, it was the office of the South Vietnamese president until a North Vietnamese tank crashed through its gates on 30 April 1975, ending the war. Today it is a national special relic where you can walk through the state rooms, the rooftop helipad and the wartime bunker. The combined ticket costs 80,000 VND and it is open daily from 7:00 to 18:00. For Muslim visitors it is an easy, secular museum, and certified-halal restaurants and the Saigon Central Mosque are within 1.5 km.
Status (checked October 2026): open every day 7:00–18:00 for the palace and the exhibition house (official schedule valid from 1 May 2026); tickets are sold 7:00–18:00 at the main gate (135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia) and 8:00–16:00 at the side gate (106 Nguyen Du). From 1 August 2026 a 500,000 VND fee applies to dedicated (professional) cameras. The palace can close at short notice for state events, so we re-confirm before every tour.

Is Independence Palace Muslim-Friendly?
Yes. The palace is a government history museum: there are no shrines or incense rituals. Dress is the only consideration, and modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is expected of all visitors, so hijab and long, loose clothing fit in naturally. The rooms are spacious, but stairs connect the floors, so allow extra time with grandparents. Women travelling in a group, families with children and first-time visitors to Vietnam all find it a calm, well-organised visit.
Independence Palace in 60 Seconds
- 1868–1873: the French build Norodom Palace for the Governor of Cochinchina on this site.
- 1962: after bombing damage, the old palace is demolished; Ngo Viet Thu’s modernist design rises in its place and opens on 31 October 1966.

What You Will See
The State Rooms
The ground and first floors hold the Cabinet Room, the Conference Hall, the Ambassadors’ Credentials Room and the President’s office, with original 1960s furniture, lacquer paintings and carpets left as they were in 1975.
The Residential Floor and Rooftop
Upstairs you see the presidential family’s living rooms, a cinema and a game room. On the roof stands a UH-1 helicopter on the helipad, and the bombing point of 8 April 1975 is marked by a red circle.
The Basement Bunker
The most memorable part for many visitors: narrow concrete corridors, war rooms, telecommunications equipment and military maps, preserved from the final months of the war.
The Tanks and the F-5E Jet
Two tanks on the front lawn recall tanks 843 and 390, which broke through the gates in 1975, and an F-5E fighter jet of the type used in the April 1975 bombing is displayed on the grounds. These are the photos children enjoy most.
The Exhibition House
Included in the combined ticket, the exhibition house shows the history of the site from Norodom Palace to today, with temporary displays that change through the year.
