Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1010, first under King Dinh Tien Hoang and then King Le Dai Hanh, before the court moved north and Thang Long became Hanoi. Two temples stand on the old palace ground, surrounded by the limestone walls that made the valley defensible in the first place. The stone carving on the King Dinh temple gate is tenth-century work and worth the few minutes it takes to look at properly.

The Trang An boat route

Trang An was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as a mixed World Heritage Site, listed for its landscape and for the archaeology of human settlement in these caves. The standard route takes about three hours in a small rowing boat and passes through a series of water caves — low, dark tunnels cut through the karst, some long enough that you duck for a minute at a time — with stops at riverside temples in between. This is the main reason to pick this tour over Tam Coc.

The temples along the river

The boat pulls in two or three times so you can walk up to small shrines set against the cliffs. Shoes come off at the doorway, the climbs are short, and the stops break up what would otherwise be three continuous hours sitting down.

The film location

Part of the valley was used as a set for a Hollywood production about ten years ago and a reconstructed village stands on the site. Some travellers enjoy it, others would rather spend the time on the water. Tell your guide which you are and the route can be adjusted.

Halal Food and Prayer

Lunch is at a halal restaurant reserved before your tour goes out. Ninh Binh has very few halal kitchens, so this is booked ahead rather than left to the guide to solve on the day.

There is no mosque in Ninh Binh. The temple grounds at Hoa Lu, the restaurant and the boat station all have quiet space and washrooms.

• Trang An gets busy with domestic visitors at weekends and on public holidays. A weekday means a shorter queue at the boat station and a quieter route.
• Take a hat and sunscreen. The boats are open and three hours of Vietnamese sun is longer than it sounds.
• Duck properly in the water caves. Some tunnels have very little headroom and the rower will tell you when, but the warning comes in Vietnamese as often as in English.
• Shoes come off at the temple doorways. Slip-ons save time at every stop.
