What You Will See

Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Day one opens at Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh declared independence on 2 September 1945 and where he now lies in the granite mausoleum at the head of the parade ground. The visit is free and takes about twenty minutes, in silence, with no photography and no stopping on the walkway; the same walled complex holds the Presidential Palace grounds, his stilt house and the One Pillar Pagoda of 1049. The constraint is the clock. The Mausoleum admits visitors on mornings only – 07:30 to 10:30 from April to October and 08:00 to 11:00 from November to March, half an hour longer at weekends – it is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and it shuts for about two months of maintenance each autumn (in 2026, early September to early November). Cover shoulders and knees and leave bags at the checkpoint. If your flight or your dates do not fit, Ba Dinh moves to the free morning on day five, or a Hanoi museum takes its place.

A night on Halong Bay

This is what the package is built around, and it is a different experience from the day boat. You board around noon and the bay empties out in the late afternoon as the day cruises head back to the harbour; what is left is a sundeck, a few other boats at anchor and limestone towers turning black against the sky. In the morning you are on the water before the first day boat arrives. Halong Bay was listed by UNESCO in 1994 and extended in 2000, and of its 1,969 islands and islets around 1,600 sit inside the protected core zone.

Sung Sot Cave and the Bright & Dark Cave

Sung Sot, the Surprise Cave on Bo Hon Island, is the largest cave most visitors to the bay see: two chambers, the second high enough that the lighting barely reaches the roof, reached by a stone stair from the jetty. The Bright & Dark Cave area is the opposite kind of place – a low tunnel you pass through sitting down, in a kayak or a bamboo boat rowed for you, into an enclosed lagoon that you cannot reach any other way.

Hoa Lu and Tam Coc

Day two goes south instead of east. Hoa Lu was the capital of Dai Viet from 968 to 1010, ringed by limestone peaks that served as walls, and the temples to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh still stand on the old palace ground. Then the boat: a small hand-rowed craft down the Ngo Dong River through the three low caves that give Tam Coc its name, two hours among rice fields and karst, with a rower who often works the oars with their feet.

Hanoi, first day and last

The capital gets the first day and the last evening. The Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 as Vietnam’s first national university, is the set piece; Al-Noor Masjid on Hang Luoc Street, built in the 1890s and still the only mosque in the city, is where the afternoon prayer fits; and the walk around Hoan Kiem Lake into the Old Quarter is how you learn the shape of Hanoi on foot.

Halal Food and Prayer

Every lunch and dinner on land is at a halal restaurant we reserve before the tour goes out, in Hanoi and in Ninh Binh. Hotel breakfast is a buffet rather than a halal kitchen; there is always fruit, bread, eggs, noodles and vegetables, and your guide will show you what to leave.

The overnight cruise on this package is Mon Chéri Cruise, which runs a dedicated halal kitchen on board. Every meal you eat on the bay is cooked in it – lunch and dinner on the first day, breakfast and brunch on the second – so the night on the water is not the compromise it is on most Halong Bay itineraries. Tell us when you book if anyone in the group needs a particular dish and the galley will prepare it; a request made on the day is harder, because the boat carries only what it loaded in the harbour.

Day one includes a stop at Al-Noor Masjid. There is no mosque in Ninh Binh or on the bay; the cabin is private and the restaurants have quiet corners and washrooms, and on the cruise the sundeck is empty in the early morning. Tell the cruise guide at check-in rather than waiting until the meal.

• Ask for a cabin on an upper deck with a balcony. The price difference is small and the view from the bed in the morning is the reason you booked the night on the bay.
• Pack an overnight bag for the cruise and leave the big case at your Hanoi hotel. We book the same hotel before and after, so this costs nothing and saves hauling luggage onto a tender.
• The bay is at its clearest from October to April. July and August are warm and good for swimming but bring haze and the occasional storm, and the harbour authority can cancel departures at short notice – we rebook or refund, never argue.
• Day two is the long drive. Have breakfast early, because the boat in Tam Coc is better before the midday heat.
• Squid fishing after dinner catches almost nothing. Go anyway: the deck lights pulling plankton out of black water is the strangest thing on the trip.
