What You Will See

Halong Bay

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1994 and extended in 2000. The bay holds 1,969 islands and islets in total, with around 1,600 of them inside the protected core zone. What you actually see from the deck is a slow parade of limestone towers rising straight out of green water, some the size of a house, some the size of a hill, most of them never touched by anyone.

Thien Cung Cave

Thien Cung, the Heavenly Palace Cave, sits on Dau Go Island and is the stop most people remember. It is a wide, high chamber lit to show the stalactites, with a walkway that climbs a flight of steps at the entrance and loops back out through the far side. Allow about 45 minutes, and wear shoes with grip: the stone stays damp all year.

Fighting Cocks Islet

Two rock stacks leaning towards each other, known in Vietnamese as Trong Mai. They appear on half the postcards sold in Vietnam and the boat slows down so you can photograph them. Best light is late morning on the way out.

The bay from the deck

Between the stops the boat simply cruises, and that is the point. There is open deck seating upstairs, tea on the table downstairs, and long stretches where the only thing to do is watch the islands slide past. For travellers who cannot give up a night to an overnight cruise, this is the compressed version of the same bay.

Halal Food and Prayer

Be clear about what the lunch on this tour is. The standard meal is served on board and is cooked without pork, lard or alcohol, built around fresh seafood, rice and vegetables. The boat kitchen is not a halal kitchen. If you need a strictly halal meal, we book a halal restaurant in Halong City before the cruise instead; that option costs more and has to be arranged when you book, not on the day.

There is no mosque in Halong City or on the bay. On the boat there is clean deck space and a quiet cabin area, and on the drive the guide can stop at a service station where you can use the washroom.

• Weather cancels boats, not rain. Halong harbour closes when the port authority says so, usually for wind or storm warnings in the typhoon months of July to September. If that happens we move your day or refund it; we do not sail.
• October to April gives the clearest air and the sharpest photographs. June to August is hot and hazy but the water is warm enough to swim.
• If you want the halal lunch in Halong City, say so when you book. The restaurant needs notice and the cruise schedule has to be shifted slightly to fit it in.
• The cave has steps and no lift. Travellers with knee trouble can stay on the boat or walk the lower section only.
• Take the back seat on the drive out and the deck on the way back. The afternoon light on the islands is better than the morning light, and most groups are asleep by then anyway.
