Ninh Binh is about 90–95 km south of Hanoi. On the expressway the drive takes about 1.5–2 hours each way.

Both are beautiful. Trang An, part of the Trang An Landscape Complex UNESCO World Heritage Site (2014), takes you through a longer route of limestone caves and temples. Tam Coc, which means “three caves”, follows a river through rice fields and three caves, and is a little shorter. Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1009, under the Dinh and early Le dynasties. Today you can visit the temples dedicated to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh, surrounded by limestone mountains.
