What You Will See

Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

The tour begins at Ba Dinh Square, the parade ground where Ho Chi Minh read the declaration of independence on 2 September 1945. His mausoleum stands at the head of it; entry is free and lasts about twenty minutes, walked in silence with no photography and no stopping, and the same walled complex takes in the Presidential Palace grounds, the stilt house he lived in and the One Pillar Pagoda of 1049. Plan around the hours rather than hoping: the Mausoleum opens mornings only, 07:30 to 10:30 from April to October and 08:00 to 11:00 from November to March, thirty minutes longer at weekends; it is closed every Monday and Friday; and it closes for roughly two months of maintenance each autumn, which in 2026 began in the first week of September and ended in the first week of November. Shoulders and knees covered, bags left at the checkpoint. If your arrival does not fit, Ba Dinh moves to the last morning in Hanoi on day six.

Sapa and the Muong Hoa Valley

Sapa sits at about 1,500 m in the Hoang Lien Son range, a former French hill station that is now a working market town for the Black H’mong, Red Dao, Giay and Tay communities of the valleys below it. Day two walks down to Cat Cat, the H’mong village about three kilometres from the centre, with its waterfall, hemp weaving and terraced fields. Day three is the better walk: an easy trek through the Muong Hoa Valley to Lao Chai, a Black H’mong village, and Ta Van, where the Giay people live, through the rice terraces that put Sapa on every list of the most photographed landscapes in Vietnam.

Fansipan, the Roof of Indochina

Fansipan is 3,143 m, the highest point in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. You do not walk it on this package; you take the Sun World cable car from the valley below Sapa, a three-rope system that climbs more than 1,400 m in about fifteen minutes and held world records for both when it opened in 2016. At the top there is a short climb or a funicular to the summit itself, a pagoda complex spread across the ridge, and – on a clear day – the whole Hoang Lien Son range below you. On a bad day you stand in cloud; that is the honest version, and it is why we put the cable car in the afternoon and keep the morning for the village.

The overnight sleeper train

Two of the five nights are on the train between Hanoi and Lao Cai, about eight hours each way in a four-berth soft-sleeper cabin with a door that locks, bedding, a light and a power socket. It is not a luxury hotel and it is not meant to be: it saves you two full days of driving and it puts you in the mountains at breakfast time. If a family of four is travelling together you get the cabin to yourselves; otherwise ask us about a private cabin or a two-berth compartment.

A night on Halong Bay

The bay comes after the mountains, and the contrast is the point of this package. Halong Bay was listed by UNESCO in 1994 and extended in 2000; of its 1,969 islands and islets around 1,600 are inside the protected core zone. You board at noon, cruise while you eat, kayak or take a bamboo boat into the lagoon at the Bright & Dark Cave, and wake at anchor before the day boats arrive. Sung Sot Cave on Bo Hon Island comes on the way back.

Halal Food and Prayer

Lunches and dinners on land are at halal restaurants we book before the tour goes out. Hanoi has a real choice; Sapa has a short list of halal and halal-friendly kitchens, which is exactly why we reserve ahead and tell the restaurant the group is Muslim rather than hoping to find somewhere on the day. Hotel breakfast is a buffet and not a halal kitchen, and your guide will point out what to avoid. On the train there is no catering we would vouch for – we send you on board with food and water from the halal restaurant in Hanoi.

The overnight cruise on this package is Mon Chéri Cruise, which runs a dedicated halal kitchen on board. Every meal you eat on the bay is cooked in it – lunch and dinner on the first day, breakfast and brunch on the second – so the night on the water is not the compromise it is on most Halong Bay itineraries. Tell us when you book if anyone in the group needs a particular dish and the galley will prepare it; a request made on the day is harder, because the boat carries only what it loaded in the harbour.

Prayer times are not fixed in the itineraries, because much of the day is spent travelling and sightseeing; tell your guide what you need and they will help where possible. Day one includes a stop at Al-Noor Masjid on Hang Luoc Street, built in the 1890s and the only mosque in Hanoi. There is no mosque in Sapa or Lao Cai and none on the bay. The train cabin is private, the Sapa hotel room is yours all day on day two, and the cruise sundeck is empty at dawn; tell your guide in the morning and the day will be ordered around it where the schedule allows.

Hotels, Rooms and the Cruise Cabin

Every price on this page is per person in a twin-share room – two travellers to a room – and you choose the hotel class yourself: 3-star, 4-star or 5-star. In Hanoi the 3-star hotels are small, well-run places in or beside the Old Quarter, the 4-star properties are larger with a lift and a better breakfast spread, and the 5-star choices are international brands with a pool and a spa. In Sapa the same three classes mean a guesthouse in town, a mid-range hotel with valley views, and a resort on the ridge. All of them include daily breakfast. The train berths are the same whichever hotel class you pick and the cruise night is on Mon Chéri Cruise in every case; ask us about a private train cabin or a balcony cabin on the boat.

• Sapa is cold. It sits at 1,500 m and from November to March the nights drop near freezing, with cloud in the valley most mornings. Bring a warm layer and a waterproof even in summer.
• September and early October are the best weeks: the terraces are gold before the harvest and the air is clear enough to see Fansipan from the town.
• Book this package early for travel around Tet and the April and May public holidays. The sleeper train sells out weeks ahead and no amount of paying more creates a berth.
• Day four is a dawn arrival and then straight on to the bay. Ask us to add a day-use room in Hanoi for the morning – it is cheap and it changes how that day feels.
• Walking shoes with grip, not sandals, for the valley trek. The path between Lao Chai and Ta Van is red clay and it stays slippery for a day after rain.
