What You Will See

Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

The week opens at Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh read the declaration of independence on 2 September 1945, and where his mausoleum now stands at the head of the parade ground. The visit is free and takes about twenty minutes: in silence, no photography, no stopping on the walkway. The same walled complex holds the Presidential Palace grounds, the stilt house he chose to live in instead of the palace, and the One Pillar Pagoda first raised in 1049. Two things decide whether it happens on day one. The Mausoleum opens mornings only – 07:30 to 10:30 from April to October, 08:00 to 11:00 from November to March, and half an hour longer at weekends – and it is closed every Monday and Friday as well as about two months for maintenance each autumn, which in 2026 ran from early September to early November. Shoulders and knees covered, bags and cameras left at the checkpoint. If day one will not work, we put Ba Dinh on the free morning of day seven before your airport transfer.

Hanoi and the first two days

The capital opens the tour, and day two takes you out of it. The Temple of Literature, founded in 1070, is Vietnam’s first national university and still reads as one: five walled courtyards and the stone stelae carrying the names of the men who passed the imperial examinations. Al-Noor Masjid on Hang Luoc Street, built in the 1890s by Indian Muslim traders, is the only mosque in Hanoi and where the afternoon prayer fits. The rest of day one is on foot – Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter, Dong Xuan Market – which is how the city makes sense.

Hoa Lu and Tam Coc

Hoa Lu was the capital of Dai Viet from 968 to 1010, chosen because the limestone peaks around it did the work of city walls; the temples to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh still stand on the old palace ground. Then the boat. Tam Coc means “three caves”: a small hand-rowed craft carries you down the Ngo Dong River through three low tunnels in the rock, two hours among rice fields and karst towers, with a rower who often works the oars with their feet. This is the day the 6-night itinerary has and the 6-day version does not.

Sapa, the valley and Fansipan

Sapa sits at about 1,500 m in the Hoang Lien Son range, a former French hill station that is now a market town for the Black H’mong, Red Dao, Giay and Tay communities of the valleys below. Day three walks down to Cat Cat, three kilometres out, with its waterfall and hemp weaving; day four is the better walk, an easy trek through the Muong Hoa Valley to Lao Chai and Ta Van among the rice terraces. Between them comes Fansipan, 3,143 m and the highest point in Indochina, reached by the Sun World cable car – a three-rope system that climbs more than 1,400 m in about fifteen minutes and held world records for both when it opened in 2016. On a clear day the whole range is below you. On a bad day you stand in cloud, which is why the cable car sits in the afternoon and the village keeps the morning.

The sleeper train and the night on the bay

Two of the six nights are on the train between Hanoi and Lao Cai, about eight hours each way in a four-berth soft-sleeper cabin with a locking door, bedding and a power socket. It is not luxurious; it saves two full days of driving and puts you in the mountains at breakfast. The last leg is Halong Bay – UNESCO-listed in 1994 and extended in 2000, 1,969 islands and islets with around 1,600 inside the protected core zone. You board at noon, kayak into the lagoon at the Bright & Dark Cave, and wake at anchor before the day boats arrive; Sung Sot Cave on Bo Hon Island comes on the way back.

Halal Food and Prayer

Lunches and dinners on land are at halal restaurants we book before the tour goes out. Hanoi gives you a real choice of kitchens; Ninh Binh and Sapa each have a short list, which is why we reserve ahead and tell the restaurant the group is Muslim rather than hoping to find somewhere on the day. Hotel breakfast is a buffet and not a halal kitchen, and your guide will point out what to leave. There is no catering on the train we would vouch for, so we send you on board with food and water from the halal restaurant in Hanoi.

The overnight cruise on this package is Mon Chéri Cruise, which runs a dedicated halal kitchen on board. Every meal you eat on the bay is cooked in it – lunch and dinner on the first day, breakfast and brunch on the second – so the night on the water is not the compromise it is on most Halong Bay itineraries. Tell us when you book if anyone in the group needs a particular dish and the galley will prepare it; a request made on the day is harder, because the boat carries only what it loaded in the harbour.

Day one includes a stop at Al-Noor Masjid. There is no mosque in Ninh Binh, in Sapa or on the bay. The train cabin is private, your Sapa room is yours all day on arrival, and the cruise sundeck is empty at dawn.

Hotels, Rooms and the Cruise Cabin

Every price on this page is per person in a twin-share room – two travellers to a room – and you choose the hotel class yourself: 3-star, 4-star or 5-star. In Hanoi the 3-star hotels are small, well-run places in or beside the Old Quarter, the 4-star properties are larger with a lift and a better breakfast spread, and the 5-star choices are international brands with a pool and a spa. In Sapa the same three classes mean a guesthouse in town, a mid-range hotel with valley views, and a resort on the ridge. All of them include daily breakfast. The train berths are the same whichever hotel class you pick and the cruise night is on Mon Chéri Cruise in every case; ask us about a private train cabin or a balcony cabin on the boat.

• September and early October is the week to pick if you can choose. The Sapa terraces are gold before the harvest, the bay is clear, and Hanoi has stopped being thirty-five degrees.
• Sapa is cold. It sits at 1,500 m and from November to March the nights drop near freezing with cloud in the valley most mornings. A warm layer and a waterproof, even in summer.
• Book early for Tet and the April and May holidays. The sleeper berths and the good cruise cabins sell out weeks ahead and no amount of paying more creates one.
• Days five and two both start with a dawn train arrival or a long drive. Ask us to add a day-use room in Hanoi for those mornings; it costs little and it changes how the week feels.
• Walking shoes with grip for the valley trek and for the Tam Coc cave steps. The path between Lao Chai and Ta Van is red clay and stays slippery for a day after rain.
