Is the Imperial Citadel Muslim-Friendly?

  • Purely historical: gates, foundations and museum rooms, with nothing to take part in.
  • Space to breathe: wide lawns and few crowds, good for groups and families with children.
  • Short hop to the mosque: Al-Noor is 5–10 minutes by car for Dhuhr or Asr.
  • Halal lunch close by: an Indonesian halal kitchen on Ngoc Ha Street, near the mausoleum.
  • Free for under-16s: a budget-friendly stop for large families.

The Citadel in 60 Seconds

A fortified seat of government stood here as early as the 7th century. In 1010 King Ly Thai To moved his capital from Hoa Lu and named it Thang Long, the “Ascending Dragon”, and the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties rebuilt their palaces on the same axis for nearly 800 years. After the capital moved to Hue in 1802 the site declined, the French took and largely demolished it in the late 19th century, and from 1954 it served as army headquarters. Digging at 18 Hoang Dieu from 2002 revealed layer upon layer of history, leading to UNESCO listing in Hanoi’s millennium year, 2010 (UNESCO listing).

Highlights Not to Miss

1. Doan Mon, the southern gate

Five arched passages, the central one once reserved for the emperor. Look down through the glass panels to see older paving beneath your feet.

2. The dragon steps of Kinh Thien

Only the stone platform of the throne hall remains, but its staircase is guarded by superb dragons carved in 1467.

3. D67 and the bunker

Walk into the meeting room where generals planned campaigns, then descend steep stairs into the shelter used during the 1972 bombing. Children usually love it.

4. Hau Lau and Bac Mon

The graceful “Princess Pavilion” closes the axis to the north, and the North Gate still bears scars from French cannon fire in 1882.

5. 18 Hoang Dieu dig site

Across the road, raised walkways cross wells, drains and column bases spanning a thousand years.

6. Hanoi Flag Tower (separate ticket)

The 33-metre brick tower of 1812 is one of the few citadel structures to survive intact.

Tips for Groups, Families and Older Travellers

  • Sun: the central axis has little shade; bring water, a hat or umbrella from May to September.
  • Bunker stairs: steep and narrow; older guests can wait above ground.
  • Guide or no guide: much of the site is about what used to stand here, so a guide makes it come alive.
  • Evenings: the weekend night tour with lanterns and music suits families who have already seen the site by day.
