Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton): History, Tickets & Night Tour | Advice for Muslim Visitors and Families (2026)
Hoa Lo Prison (Nhà tù Hỏa Lò), the French “Maison Centrale” later dubbed the “Hanoi Hilton” by American prisoners of war, is now a museum at 1 Hoa Lo Street, about a kilometre south-west of Hoan Kiem Lake. It tells the story of Vietnamese revolutionaries jailed under colonial rule and of US airmen held here from 1964 to 1973. It is open daily 8:00–17:00 and tickets cost 50,000 VND (under-16s free). For Muslim visitors there is nothing religious to navigate; the real question is whether your children are old enough for its harrowing displays.
Status (checked October 2026): open every day as normal, 8:00–17:00 including holidays, 50,000 VND per adult; the “Sacred Night” evening tour runs on selected Fridays and Saturdays and must be booked.

Is Hoa Lo Prison Muslim-Friendly?
- A history museum, nothing more: no worship is involved anywhere on the route.
- Indoors and air-conditioned: a good choice for a hot afternoon or a rainy day.
- Central: between Hoan Kiem Lake and the railway station, with certified-halal food about a kilometre away.
- A word for parents: the colonial-era rooms are deliberately confronting; prepare children beforehand.
Hoa Lo in 60 Seconds
The prison takes its name from the street, once a village of pottery kilns (“Hoa Lo” means fiery furnace). The French began building it in 1896 and filled it far beyond its capacity with Vietnamese nationalists, several of whom later led the country. During the American war, North Vietnam held downed US pilots here, among them future senator John McCain and Pete Peterson, later the first US ambassador to unified Vietnam. Most of the complex was demolished in the 1990s; the gatehouse and about 2,400 m² of cell blocks survive as a museum. Keep in mind that the exhibits present the official Vietnamese view, especially in the POW section.

What You Will See
1. The Maison Centrale gate
The yellow façade with the old French lettering is the photo everyone takes.
2. Communal cells
Rows of life-size prisoners chained by the ankle to long wooden platforms, the most powerful room in the museum.
3. Solitary cells and death row
Tiny dark cubicles that show the harshest treatment of political prisoners.
4. The guillotine room
An original French guillotine, displayed in a dim room; parents may prefer to move through quickly.

5. The sewer escape
The drain through which prisoners famously escaped, with the stories behind each breakout.
6. The “Hanoi Hilton” rooms
Photos, flight suits and objects linked to the American airmen held here.

Tips for Parents and Tour Groups
- Prepare children: tell them what they will see; let younger ones skip the guillotine room.
- Beat the groups: come at 8:00 or after 15:00.
- Rent the audio guide: labels are short and the stories make the visit.
- Read critically: compare the POW displays with first-hand accounts if the topic interests you.
