Hoan Kiem Lake: Top Must-Visit Attraction in Hanoi | Guide for Muslim Travellers (2026)
Hoan Kiem Lake (Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, also called Sword Lake or Hồ Gươm) is the green heart of Hanoi, a 12-hectare lake framed by the Old Quarter to the north and the French Quarter to the south. Strolling its shore is free at any hour; the island temple, Ngoc Son, charges 50,000 VND and opens about 7:00–18:00 (until 21:00 at weekends). For Muslim holidaymakers it is the most practical base in the capital, because Al-Noor Mosque and the city’s halal restaurants are all within roughly a kilometre.
Status (checked October 2026): everything is open as usual: the shore around the clock, Ngoc Son Temple daily at 50,000 VND, and the car-free walking street from Friday evening to Sunday night.

Is Hoan Kiem Lake Muslim-Friendly?
- Open and secular: the promenade is a public park; you can enjoy every view without entering a place of worship.
- Mosque within walking distance: Al-Noor is a 15-minute stroll through the Old Quarter.
- Halal food all around: Palestinian, Egyptian, Indian and Malay-style halal kitchens lie on the streets north of the lake.
- Family evenings without alcohol: the weekend walking street centres on games, music and snacks rather than bars.
- Comfortable for women in hijab: modest dress is the norm here and nobody gives it a second look.
Hoan Kiem Lake in 60 Seconds
Every Vietnamese child knows the tale: in the 15th century the rebel leader Le Loi drove out the Ming army with a magic sword, and in 1428, now King Le Thai To, he returned it to a golden turtle that surfaced from these waters. The lake, once called Luc Thuy (“green water”), has been the “Lake of the Returned Sword” ever since. In the 19th century the scholar Nguyen Van Sieu rebuilt the island temple and added the red bridge, and the little Turtle Tower appeared on its islet in 1886. Under French rule the shores were reshaped into today’s boulevards.
Highlights Not to Miss
1. The scarlet Huc Bridge
A curved red wooden bridge, “Morning Sunlight”, leads across to Jade Island. Photograph it from the north-east shore at dawn, or when it glows after dark.
2. Ngoc Son Temple (optional)
A 19th-century temple dedicated to the scholar deity Van Xuong, the general Tran Hung Dao and the physician La To, with incense halls and two preserved giant turtles. Entering is a personal choice; the bridge alone is worth the walk.

3. Turtle Tower
The small three-tier tower on its islet is Hanoi’s postcard image. It cannot be visited; the west shore along Le Thai To Street gives the classic view, especially at sunset.
4. Le Thai To statue and Hoa Phong Tower
A bronze king holding the legendary sword guards the west bank, while the brick Hoa Phong gate on the east bank is the last trace of a 19th-century pagoda.
5. Sunrise exercise
From around 5:00, locals jog, dance and stretch along the water. After Fajr it is a calm, very Hanoian start to the day.

6. The weekend walking street
From Friday night to Sunday night the boulevards turn into a car-free playground of folk games, buskers and families, linked to the Old Quarter night market.
