Thang Long Water Puppet Show: Muslim Family Guide, Tickets and Show Times (2026)
Is the Thang Long water puppet show a good choice for Muslim families? For most families, yes. Water puppetry is a thousand-year-old folk art from the villages of the Red River Delta, in which wooden puppets dance across a pool of water to tell stories of farming, fishing and legends, accompanied by a live traditional orchestra. There is no worship involved, the show lasts about 50 minutes, and the theatre is on the edge of Hoan Kiem Lake, a short walk from the Old Quarter’s halal restaurants. Tickets cost about 100,000–200,000 VND depending on the seat.
Why Families Love the Water Puppet Show
- Perfect for children: short, colourful scenes with dragons, fish and splashing water.
- Uniquely Vietnamese: an art form born in the rice fields and found almost nowhere else.
- Easy evening plan: show at the lake, then a halal dinner in the Old Quarter.
- Indoor and air-conditioned: ideal in heat or rain.
- Honest note: live music plays throughout; families who avoid music may prefer to skip it.

A Short History of Water Puppetry
Water puppetry began in the villages of northern Vietnam around the 11th century, when farmers performed in flooded rice fields and village ponds after the harvest. The puppeteers stand hidden behind a bamboo screen, waist-deep in water, and move the lacquered wooden puppets with long poles and strings under the surface. The Thang Long troupe, founded in 1969, made the art famous with international audiences. More background is on Wikipedia.

What You Will See
1. The Live Orchestra
Musicians beside the stage play drums, bamboo flutes, the monochord and gongs, and sing traditional cheo folk songs that narrate each scene.
2. Teu, the Narrator Puppet
A cheerful, chubby boy puppet who opens the show and jokes with the audience, a favourite with children.
3. Scenes of Village Life
Rice planting, fishing, duck herding and buffalo fights show the rhythm of life in the Red River Delta.

4. Legends and Festivals
Dragons breathing fire and water, phoenixes, boat races and the legend of the returned sword of Hoan Kiem Lake close the show in a burst of colour.
