Hoa Lo Prison for Muslim Visitors: What to Expect, Children and Night Tour (2026)

Should Muslim travellers visit Hoa Lo Prison? Yes, if you are interested in modern Vietnamese history. Built by the French from 1896 and later nicknamed the “Hanoi Hilton” by American pilots held there, Hoa Lo is now a museum about colonial repression and the wars of the 20th century. It is not a religious site, it is 1 km from Hoan Kiem Lake and 1.5 km from Al-Noor Mosque, and it takes about an hour. Tickets cost 50,000 VND; children under 15 enter free. Some rooms are graphic, so parents of young children should plan the route.

Why Hoa Lo Prison Is Worth an Hour

  • Powerful history: cells, documents and personal objects tell the story of Vietnamese prisoners under French rule and of American POWs later.
  • Central location: between Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, easy to fit between prayer and lunch.
  • No religious obligation: a secular museum, open daily.
  • Good audio guide: available in several languages for independent visits.
  • Air-conditioned rooms: a useful indoor stop on hot or rainy afternoons.

A Short History of the “Hanoi Hilton”

The French colonial government began building the Maison Centrale in 1896 and opened it in 1899. It was designed for a few hundred inmates but at times held thousands of Vietnamese political prisoners, many of whom later became national leaders. During the American War, captured US pilots were held here and gave it the ironic name “Hanoi Hilton”. Most of the prison was demolished in the 1990s for a high-rise development; about 2,400 square metres remain as a museum. Read more on Wikipedia.

What to See Inside Hoa Lo

1. The Maison Centrale Gate

The yellow arched gateway with its original French lettering is the classic photo spot before you go in.

2. Communal Cells and Shackles

Life-size figures show prisoners chained by the ankle in crowded cells. It is the most visual part of the museum.

3. The Guillotine Room

A French guillotine and execution records are displayed in a dim room. Parents with young children may want to walk through quickly or skip it.

4. The Escape Sewer and Women’s Section

Exhibits explain famous escapes through the drainage system and the conditions of women prisoners.

5. The American POW Rooms

Photos, flight suits and personal items of American pilots, including the late US senator John McCain, present the Vietnamese side of that period.
