Vinh Trang Pagoda

The stop before the river. A nineteenth-century pagoda on the edge of My Tho with a facade that mixes Vietnamese, Khmer, Chinese and French colonial detail, and three very large Buddha statues in the garden. Twenty minutes is enough, and it is the only shade you will get before the boat.

The Tien River and the four islets

From My Tho pier a motorboat takes you onto the Tien, the northern arm of the Mekong, past four islets the Vietnamese name after mythical animals: Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix and Turtle. You pass floating fish farms, stilted houses, and a working river where boats carry sand, fruit and bricks rather than tourists.

The coconut workshops of Ben Tre

Ben Tre is coconut country and the stops show you why: a yard where coconut candy is cooked and cut by hand, handicrafts carved from coconut wood, and a bee farm where the tea is served with honey and lime. You are expected to taste and there will be things to buy; nothing is compulsory.

The sampan through the creeks

The part most travellers remember. You transfer into a small hand-rowed sampan and go down a narrow creek roofed over by water coconut palms, close enough to touch. It lasts about twenty minutes and it is the quietest part of the day.

Halal Food and Prayer

Lunch is at a halal restaurant that we reserve before the tour goes out. The delta has very few halal kitchens, so this is arranged ahead rather than left to the guide to find on the day.

There is no mosque on the route once you leave the city; the restaurant and the boat landings have washrooms and quiet corners, and the driver can stop on the road back.

• Go early. The river is calmest and the light best before eleven, and the coconut workshops fill with coach groups after noon.
• The delta is hot and humid all year. Long sleeves in light cotton beat sunscreen on an open boat.
• Mosquito repellent for the sampan creek, especially from June to October.
• Bring small notes. The honey, candy and handicrafts are cheap and the sellers rarely have change for large ones.
• If anyone in the group is unsteady on their feet, say so when you book. Getting in and out of the sampan is the one awkward moment of the day and the boatman can bring the boat alongside the steps instead.
