The Story of the Lake of the Returned Sword
Hoan Kiem means “Lake of the Returned Sword”. Legend says that in the 15th century the leader Le Loi received a magic sword to drive out the Ming army, and after victory a golden turtle rose from the lake to take the sword back. The small Turtle Tower on its islet in the middle of the lake honours that story. Giant soft-shell turtles really did live here: the last one died in 2016, and a preserved specimen is displayed at Ngoc Son Temple. Read more on Wikipedia.
What to See Around Hoan Kiem Lake
1. The Huc Bridge
The red wooden bridge, first built in the 19th century, curves from the north-east shore to Jade Island. It is the most photographed spot in Hanoi; come early in the morning for photos without crowds.

2. Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of the Jade Mountain)
The temple on Jade Island honours the national hero Tran Hung Dao and the scholar-god Van Xuong. Inside are the courtyard, the preserved giant turtle and views back across the water. It is a working temple with incense and offerings, so Muslim visitors often stay in the courtyard and simply observe. Learn more on Wikipedia.
3. Turtle Tower
The three-storey tower stands on a tiny islet in the southern half of the lake. It cannot be visited, but it is lit at night and looks best from the west shore along Le Thai To Street.
4. The Weekend Walking Street
From Friday evening to Sunday night the roads around the lake close to cars. Families, street musicians, traditional games and food stalls take over. It is lively and safe, and a favourite with Muslim families after dinner.
5. Early-Morning Lake Life
Between 05:00 and 07:00 locals jog, dance and practise tai chi along the shore. After Fajr this is a calm and very local way to see Hanoi wake up.
